What It Takes to Become a USA Federal Junk Removal Hauler in Your State

You need a truck rated for at least 10,000 lbs, general liability insurance with $1 million minimum coverage, and the ability to haul anything from a jetski ($549 base) to a dead Class A motorhome ($7,100+). We've been routing jobs to owner-operators since 1993, and the guys who make real money in this network are the ones who can handle the oddball stuff — mobile homes, semi tractors, derelict boats — not just couches and water heaters.

I'm not going to sugarcoat it. This isn't passive income. But if you've already got the iron and the backbone, the work's out there.

Equipment Minimums (Non-Negotiable)

Truck or trailer capable of hauling 10,000+ lbs. Most of our jobs are big assets. A half-ton pickup won't cut it. Guys running gooseneck trailers, rollbacks, or one-tons with dump beds do well. If you can't move a 28-foot camper or a backyard spa, you're leaving money on the table.

Tie-downs, chains, and straps rated for the load. DOT doesn't care about your hustle if your load shifts on the interstate. Neither do we.

Working winch or come-along. Half the motorhomes we move haven't started in five years. You're pulling them out of mud, tall grass, or a driveway they've settled into like a tombstone.

Dump access or a landfill account. Some states require a commercial hauler permit to use the C&D (construction and demolition) side of the dump. Check with your county — your state DMV can point you to commercial vehicle rules, and most landfills post their requirements online.

Insurance and Licensing

You'll need general liability insurance, $1 million minimum. If you don't have it, get it before you apply. We don't route jobs to uninsured haulers. Period.

Some states require a commercial driver's license if your truck and trailer combined exceed 26,001 lbs GVWR. Some don't. If you're running a dually with a 14K gooseneck, you're probably fine, but verify with your state.

Business license or sole proprietor registration. Depends on your state. In some places you can operate as a sole prop under your own name with zero paperwork. Others want you registered with the Secretary of State. This is between you and your state — we just need proof you're a legit operator, not some guy with a borrowed trailer.

If you're hauling refrigerant-bearing appliances (freezers, AC units, heat pumps), the EPA requires Section 608 certification for proper refrigerant recovery. Not every hauler does appliances, but the cert costs about $20 and it opens up more jobs.

How the Work Gets Routed

We cover 38,000 cities nationwide. When a customer requests a quote — say, a Class C motorhome in Palmyra, VA — our system pings haulers in that coverage zone. You get a text or email with the job details, photos if the customer uploaded them, and a deadline to accept or decline.

Jobs are first-come. If you're fast and you're reliable, you get more work. If you ghost us or show up three days late, you don't.

Some jobs come with partial customer payment up front. Some are invoiced after completion. We handle the money. You handle the iron.

What You'll Actually Haul

Most of our corporate clients — AT&T, State Farm, Chick-fil-A, Frito-Lay — call us for weird one-offs their regular contractors won't touch. A walk-in freezer. A box truck with a blown transmission. A 40-foot shipping container someone bought on Facebook and now regrets.

But the bread-and-butter for independent haulers:

  • Motorhomes and campers. Class A from $7,100, Class C from $1,600, travel trailers from $1,099. Titles are often lost. Tires are often flat. Roofs are often rotted through.
  • Boats. From $1,299. Includes everything from a 14-foot jon boat to a 30-foot cabin cruiser on a tandem axle that hasn't moved since 2011. NOAA has good guidance on derelict vessel programs if you're coastal — some states will pay you to remove abandoned boats.
  • Mobile homes and park models. From $3,599. These are demo jobs. You're cutting it into sections, hauling it out, disposing of everything including the frame. HUD's website has info on manufactured home regulations, but honestly, once it's cut up it's just C&D waste.
  • Hot tubs and spas. From $1,050. Sounds easy until you're wrestling 800 lbs of rotted acrylic out of a deck that was built around it.
  • Semi tractors, box trucks, delivery vans. From $2,599. Fleet cleanouts. Repo lots. Farms where a truck died and stayed.

Last month I routed a job in Commerce, OK — a Class A that had been parked in a field so long the grass had grown up through the undercarriage. Hauler showed up with a heavy wrecker, pulled it out, scrapped the frame, kept the aluminum. He cleared $4,800 after dump fees and fuel. Took him six hours start to finish.

What Disqualifies You

No insurance. I already said it but I'll say it again.

No truck. We're not a leads service. We're a dispatch network. You need your own equipment.

You're three states away from the job. Our system routes locally. If you're in Nevada and the job's in Delaware, you won't see it.

You've got a history of no-shows or complaints. This is reputation-based. One bad review from a customer and you're on thin ice. Two and you're out.

How Much You'll Actually Make

Depends on your hustle and your scrap game. Base job payouts range from $549 (jetski) to $7,100+ (Class A). But the guys who make real money are the ones who scrap smart — pulling copper, aluminum, appliances, catalytic converters — before they dump the shell.

I know a hauler in the Midwest who took a $2,200 mobile home demo, pulled out the furnace, water heater, all the copper line, and the frame, scrapped it for $1,400, and still invoiced the full job. He netted close to $3,000 for a day and a half of work.

You won't get rich. But if you're already running a truck, it's consistent work. And it's work most people won't do, which means there's less competition than the furniture-and-appliance hustle.

How to Apply

Go to our Become a Hauler page and fill out the application. We'll ask for proof of insurance, photos of your truck and equipment, and your coverage area (usually a county or a 50-mile radius).

Once you're approved, you'll start getting job pings. Accept the ones you can handle. Decline the ones you can't. Show up on time. Do the work. Get paid.

If you've got questions about a specific job type or your state's requirements, call 405-698-4285 and talk to a human. We've been doing this since 1993, and we've probably dealt with weirder situations than whatever you're about to ask.

FAQ

Do I need a CDL to haul for USA Federal Junk Removal? Depends on your truck and trailer combo. If your combined GVWR exceeds 26,001 lbs, most states require a CDL. Check with your state DMV. Plenty of our haulers operate under the threshold with a regular license.

What if I don't have a dump account? You'll need one. Some guys partner with a local scrapper or demo company and pay a per-ton fee. Others get a commercial account at the county C&D landfill. Either way, you've got to have a legal place to dispose of the load.

How fast do I get paid after a job? Usually within 7–14 days of job completion and invoice submission. Some jobs pay faster if the customer prepaid. We handle all the billing — you just haul and document.

Licensing varies by city & state. We do not claim to be pre-licensed in every jurisdiction we appear to serve. Where local permits/credentials are required and we can't reasonably obtain them in time, we sub-contract a properly licensed local operator. Mobile homes, motorhomes, RVs & campers: Portland OR, Vancouver WA, and a growing list of cities now require certified asbestos testing before haul or demolition. If a sample comes back hot, abatement adds thousands in cost and unlicensed handling can carry up to one year in county jail. We do not haul around the law — we comply or we hand off.
